Bechu & Associés Triumphs in Hunnu City Master Plan Competition, Advancing Mongolia’s Vision 2050

Selected from an international open competition, Bechu & Associés has unveiled the winning vision for the masterplan of Hunnu City, an ambitious new satellite city set to rise south of Ulaanbaatar. Announced in 2025, the proposal lays out a bold, long-term urban framework for a vast 31,503-hectare territory strategically positioned near Chinggis Khaan International Airport.

Conceived as a city built in time as much as in space, the plan organizes phased development from 2025 to 2045, allowing Hunnu City to grow organically while remaining resilient to future social, economic, and environmental shifts. More than a single project, the masterplan operates as a structural backbone—guiding infrastructure, landscapes, neighborhoods, and economic hubs as they emerge over the coming decades.

Rooted in the objectives of the Ulaanbaatar 2040 Master Plan and Mongolia’s national Vision 2050, Hunnu City is envisioned as a new urban pole for the country: easing demographic pressure on the capital, fostering economic diversification, and redefining sustainable urban living in the region. In doing so, the project positions Hunnu City not merely as an extension of Ulaanbaatar, but as a future major city—designed to anchor Mongolia’s long-term territorial balance and urban resilience.
